Its secluded setting close to the Nevado del Huila and Las Hermosas national natural parks gives it unique growing conditions, and the coffee takes its name from the Paramo del Meridiano, a high altitude Andean moor that acts like a sponge, collecting water and giving birth to the Hereje River. The area suffered through Colombia's long internal conflict, but coffee has become central to life in Herrera, and Caravela has worked with its producers since 2009.
