About Sao Judas Tadeu

Dark chocolate and walnut from Piata.

Sao Judas Tadeu is grown by Antonio and Terezinha Rigno in Piata, in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, Brazil, at 1,300 to 1,380 metres above sea level. As one of Brazil's most celebrated producers, Antonio has played a pivotal role in putting Piata on the international coffee map, and after 40 years of production the 77 year old still spends every day on the farm with 80 year old Terezinha by his side, applying the meticulous approach to harvesting and processing that earned them numerous Cup of Excellence awards. The 60 hectare estate, with 15 hectares under coffee, is mainly planted with Yellow and Red Catuai, and a careful renewal program prunes up to half the trees on a two to three year cycle so each one gets plenty of nutrients and moisture, even through drought. This pulped natural Catuai is roasted by Standing Room for espresso, delivering rich dark chocolate, toasty walnut and a bright hint of mandarin.

Coffee Freshness

How fresh is the coffee I will receive?

  • We aim to deliver coffee that is less than 14 days post-roast at the time it reaches your door.
  • We work closely with our roasters to ensure peak freshness with every order.

As a general guide:

  • 0–8 days post-roast:
Coffee is fresh and drinkable, but may still be developing its full flavour.
  • 9–35 days post-roast:
Peak drinking window – flavours are well-developed and balanced.
  • 35–56 days post-roast:
Still tastes good, though flavour clarity may begin to fade.
  • 56+ days post-roast:
Coffee may start to taste stale or flat – we recommend using it sooner.
Ethical Sourcing

Is your coffee ethically sourced?

  • Yes - we only work with roasters who source their coffee ethically.

What does ethical sourcing mean to us?

  • Fair pay for farmers:
Ensuring producers receive a living income and are paid above market rates.
  • Transparent supply chains:
Sourcing coffee through traceable, direct relationships wherever possible.
  • Respect for communities:
Backing partners who invest in the wellbeing of farming communities, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

We regularly review our roasters to ensure their values and practices align with our commitment to sustainability and fairness.
