A Story of Growth and Empowerment

This unique microlot is the result of the dedication of 32 women farmers cultivating coffee on small hillside farms near the Sovu washing station in Rwanda’s Southern Province. These women are part of the Abizerwa Women’s Group—a women-led alliance within the Abahuzamugambi Ba Kawa Maraba Cooperative. The name "Abizerwa" translates to “trusted people” in Kinyarwanda, reflecting the group’s strong spirit of collaboration and mutual support.

In collaboration with international buyers, the cooperative has designated this lot as "Women’s Coffee." This initiative not only distinguishes the product in the market but also provides the women with an additional bonus payment on top of the quality premium they receive for their exceptional coffee cherries.

According to the cooperative’s General Manager, Theophile Biziyaremye, processing the coffee separately was initiated in response to specific client requests. The women deliver their coffee cherries on designated days to ensure they remain separate throughout the processing, milling, and preparation stages. The cooperative’s own dry mill facilitates the efficient handling of these smaller, specialized lots while maintaining excellent quality standards.

Each cup of this thoughtfully produced coffee carries a story of community empowerment and a commitment to excellence.
