To many, Espresso IS coffee. We are slightly more accommodating in our undeniable love for filter coffees, however, it’s hard to deny the sentiment. Art and culture aside, Espresso might well be Italy’s greatest contribution to the culinary world.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re making your espresso on a commercial La Marzocco or on a home Breville – choosing the right espresso beans is key. Espresso coffee beans are roasted differently to filter to produce different flavour profiles – typically caramel, chocolatey and, in general, less acidic than filter coffees.
Different roasting methods doesn’t change just the flavour profile of espresso beans; it also means that they perform correctly under the high pressure of an espresso machine. The roasting process affects solubility and density which influences the crema formation, extraction speed, and the overall balance in your cup. Espresso coffee beans create enough resistance to allow the machine to build pressure while still allowing the water to extract the unique flavour profile in each shot.
In short, buying the right espresso coffee beans is one part taste and one part engineering.
Our collection of espresso coffee beans includes house blends and single-origin varieties from some of Australia’s most recognised and awarded specialty coffee roasters including Blume, Code Black, Coffee Supreme, Five Senses, Legend Coffee Roasters, Maker, Market Lane, Mecca, Padre, Proud Mary, Sample, Seven Seeds, St Ali, Standing Room, and Wide Open Road.. just to name a few.
