What exactly is single origin coffee?

If you’ve been around coffee for any amount of time, you’ve likely heard the term “Single Origin”. And whilst there is a popular and well-regarded Sydney-based roaster by the same name, that’s usually not what people are referring to.

Single origin means exactly what it says on the tin – beans which are sourced from a single origin. Unlike blends which contain beans from multiple different sources or regions, single origin coffee beans are sourced from a specific farm, region or grower which gives them a unique flavour profile.

Why choose single origin?

The term “flavour journey” is thrown around pretty loosely in coffee circles, however, when it comes to single origin coffee beans – it’s probably the best (albeit cliché) way to describe them.

Single origin coffee beans celebrate the individual characteristics of the grower or region. Single origin coffee highlights specific flavours from a region that makes them instantly recognisable and unique. From the cultivation methods to environment and soil, single origin beans celebrate the individuality of different regions and practices.
